The visit of KSU representatives to Greece is underway within the framework of the Erasmus+ SAFER project
The Kherson State University team continues its work in Greece within the framework of the international Erasmus+ SAFER – Sustainable Agri-Futures: Empowering Climate Resilience and Green Growth in Higher Education project, which brings together universities from Greece, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Egypt, and Jordan.
The goal is to find solutions for sustainable development, climate resilience, and the modernization of higher education.
KSU Rector Oleksandr Spivakovskyi addressed project partners with a presentation titled «Science for Recovery. Knowledge for Resilience. Partnerships for the Future» («Science for Recovery. Knowledge for Resilience. Partnerships for the Future»).
During the presentation, he presented the experience of Kherson State University in using science as a tool for recovery.
“He spoke about how, after relocation, we managed to preserve scientific research, digital infrastructure, and communication with the academic community. He presented a geoinformation ecosystem created at the university that allows for the collection, analysis, and visualization of data regarding territories affected by the war. He specifically focused on the consequences of the destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant — one of the largest environmental catastrophes in modern Europe. He spoke about the activities of the Kakhovka Platform, which brings together geographers, ecologists, botanists, sociologists, and spatial planning specialists to form the scientific basis for the future recovery of territories.”
The Rector also presented a series of atlases of the de-occupied communities of the Kherson region, which are already helping communities, authorities, and international partners make informed decisions regarding recovery.
“He specifically emphasized that this is why the SAFER project is extremely important for KSU. We are not only gaining new knowledge from international partners but also sharing our own experience of working under war conditions, digital transformation, environmental challenges, and territorial recovery. The main idea of my speech was very simple: We did not choose these circumstances. But we chose to transform uncertainty into knowledge, knowledge — into decisions, and decisions — into recovery. It is partnership that gives us the strength to be resilient. It is science that helps us see the future even when there is much uncertainty around us”, – commented Oleksandr Spivakovskyi.
KSU representatives also presented to the SAFER project coordinator, Professor Achilleas Kontogeorgos, and the SAFER project manager, Persephone Avramidu, the English-language KSU publication «Black Swan in the History of Kherson State University, or Chronicles of a Relocated University» and «Kherson Essays: Living to Win,» which record the university's experience during the war—the institutional and personal experiences of community members. And also—a map of Ukraine.
